International Museum Day at the Pacific Museum of Earth | Honoring Mary Anning

May 17 | Birthday of Mary Anning (1799-1847) May 18 | ICOM International Museum Day

ICOM’s theme for 2020 is “Museums for Equality; Diversity and Inclusion. Mary Anning was the first woman to truly make a difference in the (then) emerging science of paleontology.

On this page you can listen to “Mary Anning” describe her background and contributions to science, check out short podcast interviews featuring women engaged in paleontology, and visit our virtual exhibit table to explore fossil specimens like those Mary collected along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, UK. We conclude with a few discussion points  to ponder.

PME social media channels (links at bottom of this page) will carry corresponding material. There, you can ask questions, make contributions and share your perspectives and interests in Earth science, paleontology and equity, diversity & inclusion in science today and throughout history.
